Your Fall Pest Prevention Checklist

Fall is in the air, but with the beauty of this season comes new opportunities for mice, spiders and other pests to invade your home.

A pile of collected leaves next to your home is an ideal spot for insects and mice to hide and nest, making homes more susceptible to entry. There are a few things you can do to ensure that your home stands up to animal or insect invaders this fall.

Outside your home:

• Rake leaf piles and soil away from foundations, and especially away from any low-lying wood or windows. Decaying and decomposing organic leaves are a breeding ground for insects and other pests.
• Inspect your home for access points. Seal off windows and doors with weather stripping. Make sure your laundry vent damper is able to freely close. Use copper mesh, expanding foam or caulk to seal the gaps between soffit gaps or areas between the trim and siding.

Inside your home:

• Spiders can be almost eliminated with a basement dehumidifier set at 40% humidity.
• Whenever you see cobwebs appear, simply sweep them down with a broom. This helps to dramatically bring down the spider population in your home.
• Keep pet food in a lidded metal or plastic trash can. This helps to reduce the opportunity for mice to enter because mice can’t climb these slick surfaces.
• Use wire shelving to store items off the floor, and keep moisture content down.
• Under the sink, store cleaning items in a caddy. Dark, high-moisture areas like sink cabinets can be “hot spots” for insects. Additionally, consider lining cabinet interiors in self-adhesive tiles to create easy-to-wipe areas.
