Preparing for Fall and Winter Pests
Fall is here and it is becoming more evident with the trees changing colors in the Carolina's. As we begin to have cooler days and nights insects and rodents want to come into your home where they find food and warmth. Their presence can be a health issue and the most common household pests are known to spread disease and cause allergies with their dander or shed skin. It is important to take proactive steps to discourage pests from staying in your home. Here are a few tips to prepare your home for fall and winter pests:
Store Food Properly - Pests are looking for dinner in your home, not just a warm place to stay. It is important to store food (rice, sugar, beans, pet food) in plastic bins. It is also a good idea not to leave food on the counter overnight. If pests can't easily access food they will get discouraged and leave.
Weather Stripping - Check to see if the weather stripping on your home's exterior doors is cracked or worn out. If it is worn out replace it. This will keep not only the cold air outside, but also pests.
Moisture Accumulation - Cockroaches, rodents, and millipedes are attracted to moisture and look for cracks in the basement, leaky pipes and clogged drains. Termites also favor moist conditions because they enjoy wet wood. Assess your home and repair any leaks or drainage issues in your home before winter sets in.
Cracks and Holes - Flies, spiders, roaches, mice and wasps are also on the lookout for a way in your home. Do you have any cracks or holes which they can enter through? If so, fill in small cracks and caulk around your windows. It is also a good idea to check your chimney and vents making sure they are screened over.
Call Thompson Brothers Exterminating and Waterproofing to schedule an appointment to inspect your home. Thompson Brothers will notify you of cracks and holes, moisture accumulation and weather stripping that needs to be remedied. If you would like to take a preventative measure, spraying your home can also be done at the same time.
