At Thompson Brothers, we take pride in the people who work here. We’re a family-owned, family-run local business, and have been for over 50 years—and for those staff members who aren’t in our family, we treat them like they are. So we thought we’d write about some of our great team members in an “employee spotlight” so you can get to know them like we do. This month’s spotlight shines on our controller, Tracy Powell.

Tracy Powell is the company’s controller. This means she has the important role of being responsible for all the accounting and finance activities of Thompson Brothers.

Tracy is a Spartanburg native who graduated from Boiling Springs High School. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with a minor in Accounting from the University of South Carolina Spartanburg (now USC-Upstate). She went on to earn a Masters of Accountancy from the University of South in Columbia. As a testament to her skills, Tracy passed the CPA exam on the first time sitting for the exam. Tracy is also a CGMA (Chartered Global Management Accountant).

She first worked in public accounting for approximately 5 years, then worked for more than 12 years as an Accounting Manager at Erwin Penland, a major advertising agency in Greenville. She joined the Thompson Brothers staff in 2016.

As you might expect, Tracy is one of the four generations of family members that have worked at Thompson Brothers. Tracy’s father, Lynn Powell (second generation), is the president and one of the owners of Thompson Brothers. He has been working here since graduating from Wofford College in 1972. Her grandfather is the late Ed Powell, who purchased the business from the Thompson Brothers.

In her free time, Tracy enjoys reading, especially about history and fashion, and watching classic movies and TV shows. She is a vital part of the Thompson Brothers team, and part of the reason that we can serve our clients personally and professionally.
